Abstract:The cinema market's box office sales came to £506mn in 1998, 43% higher over 5 years. In volume terms admissions came to 135mn tickets, 1994 124mn. The number of screens is nearly 3000 across the UK, 5 years ago less than 2000, at around 760 cinema sites. Cinema-going involves a higher proportion of the population ever year, with 83% of those aged 7 and over having claimed to be a cinema-goer in 1998, up from 75% in the previous year, 64% in 1990 and under 40% in the early 1980s.
