Abstract:This paper pursues three objectives: I. It aims to identify the determinants of the performance of German motion pictures as to the cinema admissions and producers' rates of return. II. Against the background of heavy subsidization of the German film industry, it discusses two types of subsidy allocation: 1. committee principle allocation (here as: pr-alloc.) and 2. reference pr-alloc. III. The profitability of the industry is considered as the presumed economic non-viability of the industry constantly recurs in the public debate as an argument for subsidies.
