Abstract:Different kinds of communication and information systems have been applied in organizations in order to facilitate the intra-organizational flows of knowledge, but the technology in itself will not guarantee that information will be voluntarily shared. It has been argued that various cultural and other human factors affect the success of knowledge sharing. It is not clear which human variables are at stake and which management practices can affect those variables. The article explores the different variables (psychological, organizational and system-related) which may have an influence on the individual’s readiness to participate in knowledge sharing. Results of a large survey of employees in a multinational corporation are presented, and the different variables affecting the employee’s participation in knowledge sharing are introduced.
