Abstract:This paper presents a method for perceiving the risks of patent infringement by evaluating similarities btw. patent documents based on semantic patent analysis. In this way, similarities in the contents on a semantic patent map can be visualized by means of multi-dimensional scaling. In the field of biotechnology, patents can include several hundreds of pages. The method presented herein introduces an interdisciplinary approach, combining computer-aided natural language processing with domain-specific expertise of bio-chemical processes. This is clarified by an authentic case of infringement involving two DNA chip manufacturers. It is shown how the infringement case is visualized on a patent map based on semantic patent analysis.
