Abstract:The authors propose that the use of total quality management (TQM) practices will improve just-in-time (JIT) performacne through process variance reduction and reduced rework time and that JIT practices will improve quality performance through problem exposure and improved process feedback. Using data on 42 plants in three US industries, the authors found that common infrastructure practices formed a strong foundation for both types of performance; in addition, the authors demonstrated that TQM and JIT practices interacted.
