Abstract:The just-in-time (JIT) management technique is described as it is successfully employed within the Japanese manufacturing industry. The various components of JIT are investigated and special mention is made of production smoothing, job standardization, multifunction workers, and Kanbar. There is also a more detailed look at the major prerequisites of the system, as a guide to its implementation by Western managers. Training, long-term planning, management and government support, unions involvement, the modification of department functions are mentioned as the main requirements. Several conclusions are drawn as to the merits and benefits of JIT. It is predicted that the system will grow in popularity.
