Abstract:Just-in-Time is a package of proposals for reorganising manufacturing methods in repetitive manufacturing. It is also claimed to be an attitude or philosophy. Presentations of JIT include an attack on accounting methods. Intense conflict between production management and other functions can be expected over the introduction of JIT. General managers will be called upon to arbitrate between the warring factions and take a final decision. This paper disentangles the valid and invalid charges and proposals, and makes recommendations about which of the latter should be adopted.
