Abstract: | Japanese manufacturing methods such as just-in-time production and total quality control are serving as a model of manufacturing organization which many UK manufacturers are currently following. The implementation of just-int-time production and its supporting practices in two factories are described. The conditions required by just-in-time systems are discussed. Statistical process control and other techniques place an emphasis on error prevention rather than error detection, a necessary condition for production to occur successfully with minimal buffer stocks. A political dimension to these innovations is demonstrated which requires rewriting of organizations' political and cultural maps. |
