Abstract:Kawasaki is often synonymous with motorcycles, despite the diversity of its operations - shipbuilding, rolling stock manufacture - to name but two. Soon its claim to fame could be in another field entirely. The company's success in applying a single just-in-time approach to its wide variety of production environments. The extent to which the KPS (Kawasaki Production System) approach improves labour productivity is particularly impressing. Up until now their expectations from just-in-time systems have been confined to improved lead times and work-in-progress. From mass production to one-offs, from high-tech to low-tech, the same KPS techniques are in action.
