| Abstract: | Economic growth in the industrial countries which was strong in the first half of 2000 has slowed down markedly as a result of progressive monetary tightening and a substantial increase in oil prices. The slowdown was particularly pronounced in the US and in Japan, while the deceleration was relatively mild in the Euro Area because monetary policy had been expansionary until recently and exports were stimulated by the continued devaluation of the euro. |
