Abstract:Recent worldwide economic expansion has been driven by globalization and trade, but unfortunately, the resultant material growth has led to increased degradation of ecosystems and other life-support functions. Globalization has enabled wealthy nations in Europe and North America to sustain themselves by taking advantage of the resources on the other side of the globe. Even poorer countries that are mainly reliant on local resources have ever increasing dependence on imported resources due to population and economic growth, urbanization, and rising standards of living becoming more and more common.
