Abstract:The comparison of French and British rates and duration of unemployment since 1978 until 1984. It reveals a constant characteristic: the inversion of the impact unemployment upon men and women. The position of women in the system of education as well as in the production is analyzed. Statistics are used to show that two models of the social regulation of the labour market and of womens' maternal role have developed. They involve a plurality of social actors and have well-known consequences upon unemployment. This societal analysis of the labour market indicates that the economic and sociological approaches cannot be effective if they are used separately.
