Abstract:Wind energy is the first of the new renewable energies to be realized on a commercial scale. Its application is the part of a change in the nature of electricity generation towards dispersed local generation. The progress made by wind energy in the last 10 years and the potential of this technology are described. Wind energy programmes of different countries are discussed. The technology's degree of maturity is assessed, economic, market and institutional issues are evaluated. The barriers to deployment of wind energy are investigated including environmental impact and the measures required to implement a wind energy programme are described.
