Abstract: | Four groups among 113 Fortune 500 manufacturers that approach innovation quite differently are identified. Innovation was measured four ways - sales volume from early life cycle stages, new technology products, technological leadership and new product pioneering. Twenty-seven hypothesized correlates of innovation were drawn from strategy, environment, and formal and informal organization. Both product innovation and financial performance differ significantly over the groups. Particularly important for explaining differences are strong positions in growing markets, investmen in R and D, open and creative organizational structures and supportive organizational climate. Some implications for managers are summarized. |
