Abstract:The author examines the continuity of maps between linearly ordered spaces and apply the results to utility functions representing preference relations. In particular, the author shows that the continuous function constructed by Debreu is, in essence, unique. In this paper he discusses the continuity of strictly increasing maps between linearly ordered spaces. The results were motivated by, and have implications for, utility theory and the author starts with a brief account of the theory.
