Abstract:Someone had to tell the Finns the party was over. It took a lot of doing, but Iiro Viinanen finally convinced them they'd have to tackle public spending and do something about the national debt. His seceret? Firm convictions, disregard for personal popularity and a blunt, even abrasive, manner. Three years ago Finland was hit by a collapse in the price of its main exports (forestry products) and its trade with Russia. Suddenly it became essential to reduce public sector debt. But the finns didn't want to know. "Week after week I talked about the same problem," Viinanen laments.
