Abstract:Evolutionary approaches are not based on the assumption of a given knowledge and therefore seem to offer some potential to formulate a theory of the firm in an indeterministic world. A part of evolutionary approaches employs metaphori- cal analogies that are derived from biology to put strategic management on a theoretical foundation. To begin with, non- evolutionary and evolutionary approaches are characterised. It is then demonstrated why biological analogies fail to provide an economic theory of the firm even if they are expanded to comprise general system theory or explanations that depict firms as the result of a natural selection.
