Abstract:Bleaches, disinfectants and lavatory cleaners are all designed to do much the same job, of cleaning the toilet, and their formulation is also becoming similar. Original bleaches were for killing germs and toilet cleaners were for cosmetic purposes, but now germ-kill is common to all. The total market is valued at 244 million pounds at retail prices for the current year, and it is growing modestly in real terms. Value growth is restricted by the large and growing power of supermarket own-labels. Multiple supermarkets, excluding the co-ops, command 80% of the market's value. As a result retail prices are being restrained although suppliers' costs are rising.
