Abstract: | This article studies how the R&D surveys are conducted in the service sectors and how the R&D surveys are operationalised to service sector managers and how the surveys may give an underestimated picture of R&D practices in service sectors. The paper analyses existing statistical sources, interviews and work shops with service firms managers concerning R&D practices. The author suggests that the formulation of the questions in the surveys is too technological and ignores the social scientific R&D, thus reducing the reporting of R&D by service firms. In addition the author adds that the concept of R&D in itself can be hard for service firms to use when documenting innovation. |
