Abstract:This paper provides evidence on factors driving productivity growth in the new EU member states. It focuses particularly on Polish manufacturing industries. The results indicate that companies in Poland benefit significantly from transfer of technologies accumulated in more developed economies. There is no strong evidence on immediate technology transfer. There is evidence that innovation effort plays a substantial role in expanding firms' capacities to absorb technologies invented abroad. The direct effect of innovation outlays and its link with the speed of convergence is especially strong in high-tech industries, highly privatized industries and industries initially further from the technology frontier.
