Abstract:The role of information systems in government agencies is characterized. It has moved up in importance under the 15-project Presidential Priority Systems - a part of the five-year plan for meeting the automatic data processing and telecommunication needs of the US federal government. Two key projects are described. One of them is the Interior Department's automated land and minerals record system. The other one is the USDA's (Department of Agriculture) farm loan system, which supports the management of over 2 million loans. Comparisons are made between the earlier manual and the automatic data processing. Federal IS budgets are forecasted for fiscal years 1988 and 1989. Many other relevant data are analyzed.
