Abstract:Pharmaceutical research and development expenditures of Smith Kline Corporation are analyzed since the beginning of the seventies. The selection principles of talented researchers are discussed. Guidelines of recruiting are outlined. The most important factors influencing a choice are summarized. Three rules for keeping scientists motivated are formulated: emphasize over and over how valuable their purpose is: focus on the quality of their ideas, not on their position in the organization, their personality or anything else: continue to give them a chance to practice their craft as they rise in the organization, allowing even presidents and vice presidents to be scientists on a regular basis.
