Abstract:The background of the decision by the Massachussetts Institute of Technology /MIT/ to cancel a purposed deal to lease a Japanese supercomputer is illuminated. The MIT was pressured by the US government. DATAMATION has learned that Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, also felt political pressure during its supercomputer procurement. Japan's opinion on MIT's decision, on the possible chilling effect concerning the supercomputer market. Negative effects can be forecasted on research at American universities. MIT's alternative plan is reviewed. US government pressure is criticized. Foreign competition is described as a factor which spurs US supercomputer manufacturers to do better.
