Abstract:Most private sector businesses are unwilling to support basic computer science research because the payoffs come too far in the future. Therefore, academic computer science researchers must count on the government for most of their funding. However, with budget squeezes, the emphasis is increasingly on defense-related applied research by the government, at the expense of basic research. The agency called Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency /DARPA/ funds now several research projects in computer science. Some project funding from DARPA is overviewed, and some commercial benefits of DARPA research are discussed.
