Abstract:A new method for classifying conglomerates into groups with similar economic characteristics is proposed. Conglomerates with business segments that are similar in their response to movements of business cycle, and that sell their products or services to the same broad economic sector are assigned to the same group. The empirical results indicate that this classification theme yields groups of firms that are more homogeneous than the traditional SIC in terms of most financial ratios, systematic risk, and prediction of future earnings.
