Abstract:High turnover among research and development employees often is attributable to inadequate compensation systems. This can be very costly to the company. These people are difficult to replace. Those who depart frequently start their own competing companies. The characteristics of a flexible and adaptive pay system are explained. The problem of how to reward top performers - key contributors - is examined. Aggregate incentives should be used in tandem with individual rewards to promote team spirit. Educational and sabbatical opportunities are suggested. The disruptive effects of an inflexible hierarchical grade system are shown. The role of rewarding long-term results and the dual-career ladder option is highlighted. Some examples are given.
