Abstract:The very bad environmental situation is analyzed in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Examples of destroying environment are given and the young Green Movement of the region introduced. Finally the conclusion is drawn that international cooperation will be critical to the region's environmental restoration. The West also has an obvious role in preventing "ecological colonialism", the export of environmentally hazardous forms of resource extraction or industry of countries with lax regulations and a thirst for hard currency. The possible forms of Western help are classified. First of all the West could consider the reduce of debt burdens of the region.
