Abstract:More and more academics are finding themselves in the role of a consultant. While academic engineers, architects, medics, lawyers and management scientists have always acted as consultants, numerous disciplines, particularly in the arts, humanities and social sciences, have only recently ventured to package and sell their skills. When, if ever, is it wise to retain an academic as a consultant? What differences should be expected from a full-time business consultant? How can the best be gained from both worlds? These questions are discussed in depth, covering the problems of professional and academic values, the difference of academic and business world and the differing gifts.
