Abstract:The issues of external linkages in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are examined. Data are presented. A case study of one of the leading biotechnology firms is reported. One area in which SMEs can suffer a market disadvantage is that of establishing the appropriate network of contacts with external sources of scientific and technological expertise and advice. The importance of in-house technical skills to linkage activity is emphasized. The relationship between in-house and external know-how accumulation is investigated. The role of technology strategy in guiding the accumulation process is explained. Public technology policies should be adapted to the specific needs of SMEs and offer support through the innovation chain.
