Abstract: | This feature offers advice when competence-related pay could be suitable and why it might be more effective than other renumeration systems. The wisdom of relating pay to competence has recently been questioned by number of commentators. Despite this, interest in competence-related pay is rising. Paying for competence is neither a simple nor easy option, but it can be very worthwhile. One of the problems with competence-related pay is defining competence. Distinction should be made between "hard" competence - the standards people carrying out a job need to attain - and "soft" competencies - the personal skills and behaviors that underpin competent performance. |
