Abstract:The lack of systematic knowledge on the SMEs training (hereafter as: trng.) practices could be explained by the lack of financial resources and the low-motivation of managers to invest in skill development, which is the so-called "competence paradox" (here as: "c-prx."). According to the "c-prx." firms investing in their employeesÂ’ competence development (here as: compt-dev.) simultaneously increase the risk employees leaving the company. The analysis herein intends to better understand such kind of non-formalized practice of learning in the company practice, using the empirical experiences of case studies in three selected sectors. One of the most important methodological messages of this research project is that the "right mix" of both quantitative and qualitative research techniques can describe the variety of compt-dev. and trng. in the SMEs.
