Abstract:In this study the authors show the reasons why chief information offers (hereafter as CIOs) can have difficulties to generate business value from information technology (hereafter as IT) investments. The analysis takes into account the contemporary organization structures, authority patterns, processes and mindsets. The problem in IT management is that CIOs try to coordinate the needed knowledge without having access and authority over necessary resources. The paper identifies a set of competencies that enable to control the social capital and knowledge that is required to create business value.
