Abstract:This paper explores the role of beauty in politics using candidate (henceforth as: cnd/s.) photos figuring prominently in electoral (here as: e-l.) campaigns.
The study is based on visual assessments of 1929 Finnish political cnd/s. from more than 10,000 respondents out of which over 3,700 were Finnish, the others being from the Scandinavia (that is Denmark and Sweden), and from France, Germany and the Americas.
As Finland has a proportional e-l. system, it is possible to compare the e-l. success of non-incumbent (as: n-i.) cnd/s. representing the same party. An increase in the study's measure of beauty by one standard deviation is associated with an increase of 20 percent in the number of votes for the average n-i. parliamentary cnd/s. The relationship is unaffected by including education and occupation as control variables etc.
