Abstract: | Over the last decade there has been a spirited debate among comparativists as to whether the post-communist transition reflects the earlier transition process in Latin America and Southern Europe or whether it is unique. This article seeks to make a contribution to this debate by exploring the structural determinants of social cleavages in Romania and Ukraine. These countries were chosen in order to compare whether the pre-World War I and communist legacies have a comparable influence on voting behaviour. The authors analyse the effect of several independent variables on voting behaviour, including the historical legacy, ethnicity and socio- economic indicators. Unlike previous research, the authors find that socio-economic variables are only slightly influential in explaining voting patterns. |
