Abstract:The article deals with this year's sectoral bargaining round in Finland, and assesses the prospects for a successful return to national bargaining next year. The 2000 bargaining round was conducted on a sectoral rather than a national basis following the decision of key trade unions not to enter into national bargaining this year. Despite fears that this would lead to damaging wage competition, the majority of settlements have followed a 3.1 % pay benchmark and have been achieved relatively smoothly, with a few exceptions, notably a national strike in the paper industry.
