Abstract:The 2000 bargaining round was characterised by the most widespread industrial unrest seen in Norway for 15 years, after which relatively high pay increases were accepted in both the public and the private sector. With pay rising at a faster rate than recommended by a tripartite committee and unemployment running at just 3.2% of the workforce, many feel that the fabled "solidarity alternative" strategy of wage moderation has functioned so well over the past decade that it is no longer relevant.
