| Abstract: | The Portuguese government cancelled two recent bond auctions and shelved plans for further global issues. The author looks at the effect on the markets. The Bank of Portugal should have acted more quickly to protect the participants in the market. Everyone suffers when the rates are raised sharply, so they should have been more aggressive in the beginning. Portugal has a lot of potential for issuers and investors alike. But first its treasury and central bank must develop the lightning reactions that currency speculators fear , and the predictability that investors love. |
