Abstract:The article examines self-managed work teams(SMWT) of two Portuguese industrial companies using a case study approach. The nature of SMWTs is investigated by distinguishing between the coercive and enabling face. The coercive features are related to incidental job rotation to optimize technology, differences in technical knowledge between team members and engineers or supervisors, economic cohesion based upon group performance system, and peer pressure toward self-discipline. The enabling features are related to extensive employee participation and communication, and high job enrichment levels.
