Abstract:This article investigates ways of creating research questions from existing literature. 52 articles in organization studies are reviewed and a typology of how researchers compose their research questions is developed. The most common way is to spot multiple "gaps" in the literature and to frame specific research questions. This article also indicates why assumption-challenging approaches are unusual, and identifies social norms that makes gap-spotting more popular.
