Abstract: | The potential benefits of decentralizing the governance of developing countries are well known, but less attention is paid to the potential difficulties and dangers. This article provides a framework for analyzing decentralization of tourism governance, and examines the transfer of authority and the distribution of power, legitimacy and accountability. The Turkish coastal region is used as an example when researching the involvement of central and local government, a privatized company, and a nongovernmental organization. The results suggest that decentralization should not be adopted without careful consideration. |
