Abstract:In judging the combined environmental (here as: env-al.) and economic performance of product systems, processes, and/or companies, the concept of eco-efficiency (here as: e/e) has been increasingly applied. An indicator, called environmental cost efficiency (ECE), has been proposed for the assessment of end-of-pipe technologies (here as: e-of-p-techs). ECE is defined as the ratio of net env-al. benefits to the difference in costs. ECE is applied to four e-of-p-techs. for the treatment of municipal solid waste: sanitary landfill, mechanical-biological treatment, modern grate incineration, and a staged thermal process. To quantify the net env-al. benefit, a life-cycle assessment is performed. In addition, the approximate net costs are quantified. It is shown that, relative to grate incineration, sanitary landfills and mechanical-biological treatment are less costly but environmentally more harmful etc.
