Abstract:Data on taxation have been lately used to measure the share of total income held by the richest groups. This paper examines the relationship between standardized top income shares in 13 developed countries and broader inequality measures. The results show a significant link between top income shares and inequality measures, such as the Gini coefficient. These findings imply that panel data on top income shares could be used as a substitute for other measures of inequality when needed.
