Abstract: | Reform and opening have promoted the rapid and sustained growth of economy and improvement of people's living standard as a whole Between 1978-1993, China's economy grew by 9 percent. After deduction of inflation factors, the annual average growth of farmer's income stood at 2 percent, while that of factory employees was 5 percent. The transition from the traditional planned economy system to the socialist market economy motivated social progress. Costs of social development lies in too high a birthrate in rural areas, damages to water conservancy, farming machinery and natural resources, increasing costs of reform of state-owned enterprises and a widening gap between regional economy, and between urban and rural residents in income. |
