| Abstract: | Problems of managing the supply system are discussed. The role of the strong support of suppliers in creating technology intensive products is examined. Strategic manufacturing is described as a partnership between the big corporations and smaller suppliers. Tasks of purchasing managers are summarized. Examples are presented for successful supply system management. Selection of suppliers is discussed. The General Motors' evaluation procedure is described in detail. Product design is examined as a team activity. Just-in-time supply systems are analysed. Certification programs are found to be an important factor in motivating suppliers. Managerial implications are summarized. |
