Abstract:Yet, recent experience seems to fly in the face of this belief. The strategic management of the multi-business firm remains a challenge that bedevils many corporations. However, the sustained success of companies like General Electric, ABB, Allied Signal, Tyco, 3M, Canon and others, over a decade or more, suggests that diversification can still be an attractive route to corporate growth. When we look at what has changed, three themes stand out. Our understanding of relatedness has expanded, organization has become more significant than corporate strategy in the highly diversified firm, and leadership is more important than ever. Each of these themes is examined in some detail in the remainder of this article.
