Abstract:The authors believe that this research has, if only in a small way, offered a genuine insight into the strategic operations management debate. First, the authors have established a definition of an operations strategy and suggested that it has a clear role in the strategic hierarch of any organization. The authors then developed a genealogy and typology of operations strategies using a social science conceptual framework and empirical evidence that delineated between pattern of organization (the generic form) and the structure (the physical embodiment). This allowed us to begin to explore the notion that although each strategy may have similar building blocks, its physical embodiment will be evidenced in a unique blending of those components that provides a specific strategic architecture.
