Abstract:In 2000-2001, companies were hit hard by a number of economic shocks, including industry-specific cycles, the stock market collapse, and national recession. To better understand how companies successfully cope with such adversity, the authors studied the responses to these recent shocks as well as earlier episodes from the 1980s and 1990s. The study included two surveys of 55 large companies, and in-depth case studies in a subset of those industries. The results revealed the importance of acting quickly to contain costs as soon as sales growth slows. More importantly, a number of additional actions taken by some companies years before enabled them to successfully deal with the adversity of 2000-2001.
