Abstract:Mental models are unique, as they are formed through one's specific experiences and ways of engaging with the world. This paper bases on a decade of research and is illustrated with multiple references to both large and small European and American organizations in the for-profit, non-profit and governmental sectors. Five guiding questions are presented to help identifying and correcting gaps in managers' mental models of their organizations. The approach enables managers to be clear about how to move their organizations in the desired direction to achieve their goals. The framework of exercises based on the five questions integrates traditional strategic dimensions, allowing leaders to identify gaps in their mental models, which results in more effective leadership and improved performance.
