Abstract:Absenteeism is a major problem for British industry - so much so that the Government has taken steps to effectively abolish the refunds employers get on statutory sick pay, as of 6 April. Yet, as Ivor Watkins reports , surprisingly few employers recognise the extent of the problem. No employer can afford to ignore absenteeism, especially as the wage bill is probably the largest cost a company has to pay. Statistics show that poor motivation and work-related stress are major contributory factors to absenteeism for manual and non-manual workers respectively.
