Abstract:Supermarkets have established a visible presence in Shanghai with appr. 1.000 stores. They have an estimated 5 % of market share. Local chains dominate the sector but well-known international retailers are active. Studies indicate that consumers regularly shop in supermarkets but use them selectively. This study analyzes supermarkets' penetration into Shanghai.
